When talking about Kolkata the very first thing that strikes to the mind is “Howrah Bridge”. It is not only a bridge but also a place for tourism, shooting etc. Howrah Bridge is a gateway of Kolkata opening at the Howrah station. It is a bridge that is spanned over the Hooghly river since 1943. Before the inception of the Howrah bridge, there was a proposal to build a suspended-girder bridge to cross the Hooghly river. Howrah bridge is the replacement of pontoon bridge linking between Howrah and Kolkata. There was also a proposal to build a tunnel or an arched bridge to cross Hooghly river. However, Both the proposal canceled out and Howrah bridge came into existence.
However the construction of the Howrah bridge started in 20 century, but the construction of it can be traced back to 1871. The proposal was to construct a passage between two cities Hooghly and Calcutta with the act of Howrah Bridge act. The act was later amended to facilitate the construction.
The construction of the bridge took 6 years to complete started in 1936 and completed in 1943. The first vehicle travel on the bridge was a solitary tram. The bridge stretches across 705m and width 71 feet. It is regarded as the third most long bridge at the time of construction. Now, it is the 6th longest cantilever bridge in the world.
This is one of the busiest cantilever bridge bearing the load of 100,000 vehicles and over 150,000 pedestrians each day. The bridge made of 26,500 tons of steel, out of which 23,000 tons of high-tensile alloy steel, known as Tiscrom, were supplied by Tata Steel.
People usually come to see Howrah bridge to get a nice experience. Now, this bridge becomes a famous spot for film shooting. The bridge is so long that it takes around 15 to 20 minute to cross it by walking. In the evening the air flows around the bridge which gives you a cool experience. Now, the bridge is checked by the contractors to check any damages that need to be fixed. 6.5 million of rupees is spent to fix its damages. The bridge exists from the British period. At night, you will get minimum traffic on the bridge, but during the daytime, the bridge is packed with traffic.
